Prince Wales Will Participate in UN Climate Summit in South America
Prince William plans to attend the key UN climate summit in Brazil in the coming weeks, but the prime minister's participation remains to be determined.
The Prince will introduce the global environmental award and take part in the conference of representatives from over 190 governments in the Brazilian city.
Climate Specialists Welcome Prince William's Participation
Environmental experts praised the prince's presence. A sustainability expert noted that it would boost what is expected to be a complex conference, where international consensus on fresh targets for cutting greenhouse gas emissions is necessary.
"Does the Prince's presence at the summit a publicity move? Yes. But that doesn't mean it's a bad idea," the expert said. "The summit has long been as much about what's termed 'optics' as it is about discussions. The Prince's commitment will probably encourage other officials to commit, and will capture international press."
"I believe HRH is fully aware that by participating, he'll attract millions of viewers to the event. In an time when environmental effects are escalating, but news reporting is declining, anything that highlights the issue should be applauded."
Royal Presence at Previous Climate Summits
King Charles has participated in earlier UN summits, but will not participate in this one.
Endorsement from Climate Organizations
A leader from a sustainability organization said: "Full participation is needed – and every influential person like the Prince of Wales, there assisting argue for the challenging task that needs doing, is likely a positive development."
"[King Charles was the Prince of Wales when he attended Cop26 and pitched in to galvanise negotiations. I would argue it necessarily requires both of them to participate."
PM's Attendance Remains Uncertain
The British prime minister has not yet said whether he plans to join the conference, to which all international officials are expected, with many set to attend. He was strongly criticized by leading sustainability leaders for showing indecision on the commitment recently.
"World leaders should be in Brazil for the climate conference. Participation is not optional, it is a demonstration of responsibility. This is the opportunity to establish enhanced country pledges and the resources to achieve them, especially for resilience" to the effects of the climate crisis.
"International observers is paying attention, and the future will remember who showed up."
