{'I could have killed them' - Lawson encounters dangerous incident with Formula 1 safety personnel
Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson stated he barely escaped a life-threatening incident during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when a pair of track officials darted across the track right in his path
The alarming incident took place on the third circuit when track officials were observed on the track as Lawson was returning to the race following an premature pit stop to change his compromised front wing
Driver's Immediate Reaction
Moments later, the Formula 1 racer Lawson radioed to his race engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Could you believe what happened? I might have... taken their lives"
"I honestly couldn't believe what I was witnessing"
"I exited on a new set of hards, and then I got to Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two dudes dashing across the track"
"I nearly hit one of them, truthfully, it was so dangerous"
Security Issues Highlighted
"Obviously there's been a communication breakdown at some point but I've never experienced that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"
"We fail to grasp how on a live track safety personnel can be permitted to just sprint across the track in such a way. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm sure we'll get some sort of explanation, but it really can't happen again"
Official Investigation Underway
Formula 1's governing body, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is thoroughly reviewing the circumstances
"Following a turn one incident, the race directors was notified that wreckage remained on the track at the turning point of that curve" declared the governing body
"In the third rotation, track officials were informed and placed on standby to enter the track and recover the debris once the entire field had cleared the area"
"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had made a pit stop, the orders to send personnel were rescinded and a caution signal was displayed in that zone"
"The examination is ongoing what happened subsequent to that time"
