Synthetic pictures claiming to portray Venezuela's president detained following his apprehension by the US have gained countless of impressions on social media.
How AI Images of the President Emerged Rapidly
Initial fabricated synthetic picture apparently displaying him being escorted off a aircraft surfaced within hours. This image was absent from any official American sources; rather, it was uploaded on X by an account purporting to be an “enthusiast of AI-generated art”.
Our analysis used Google’s SynthID, determining the image was produced or modified with generative AI.
Further synthetic visuals started circulating in the subsequent hours, appearing to show additional perspectives of Maduro under guard. Noticeable logos on the graphics indicate they were posted by an Instagram profile called ultravfx.
AI analysis confirms these additional images were similarly created or altered generative models.
Authentic Image Posted but Fabrications Continued
The former US president posted the first real photo of Maduro handcuffed aboard the USS Iwo Jima on Saturday morning. Yet following the authentic image was made public, synthetic pictures kept circulating but were updated to show the grey athletic wear worn by Maduro.
Reverse image searches indicate these altered fabrications were first posted on the video platform by a graphic design profile. Similarly, SynthID found these further images were created or altered Google AI.
