2026 is Poised to Be Dubbed the Age of the Croaking Craze.
My key observation from the recent Day of the Devs showcase was highly engaging, my biggest takeaway was a personal epiphany: I am convinced that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.
No fewer than five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these leaping protagonists. Considering a band of frogs is known as an army, it feels they are staking their claim.
A Legacy of Leaping
Croaking characters are not at all new to the world of games. From the arcade classic Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a special place. However, their visibility has seemingly increased in recent times.
A quick search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an absolute deluge of results. Although, some of these are novelty titles, a sizable number are serious amphibian adventures.
A Data-Driven Dive
To grasp this phenomenon, I undertook a detailed review into the past five years of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My methodology was admittedly subjective, counting games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.
The data tell a compelling story: a consistent uptick from under 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.
This notable escalation prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The amphibian's growing prominence in the cultural zeitgeist is partially visible elsewhere, such as the popularity of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. However, the trend in gaming appears especially powerful.
Designing for a Sticky Tongue
Frankly, this is a movement I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs offer inherent appealing traits for game developers.
- Charming Creatures: They are ideally shaped to be designed as quirky characters that frequently end up as a fan favorite in any game.
- Unique Gameplay: Their long tongues and sticky tongues lend themselves to a myriad of innovative control schemes.
A number of the showcased games clearly utilize these traits. Examples include the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.
The Leap Into 2026
So, what is the outlook for 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has officially commenced—and the potential for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the largest year so far.
When these games find success—and traditionally, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we might just be witnessing a full-blown croaking cultural moment.
